Schools4Freedom brings entire villages to freedom by educating children and teaching everyone about their rights. At our schools in northern India, children are taught the 3 Rs and everyone learns how to use the legal system to fight their slave owners and free themselves forever.

CONTEXT

Generations of families are enslaved in India over an average loan of just $18.00.

The families are grateful to the moneylenders who gave them rupees for emergencies such as medicine for their sick children.

The moneylenders charge exorbitant interest rates, and the debt is impossible to pay off.

That means villagers who can’t read, write or count are tricked into working endless hours for the moneylender. They can’t get away and are beaten if they try.

Children are forced to work alongside their parents.  There are no schools, and it seems that there is no chance for a better future.

They have become slaves.

Even though slavery is illegal.

SCHOOLS4FREEDOM educates and liberates

SCHOOLS CONVINCE ENSLAVED PARENTS TO RISK FREEDOM

All over the world, parents will do most anything to give their children better lives. So when activists go undercover into enslaved villages, they tell parents that their children can learn to read and write at a transitional school right there in the village.

The hope for a better future for their children fuels the parents past their fear of slaveholders’ thugs. They join together, with the help and support of activists. Villagers learn that it is possible to free themselves and demand change.

The school is the distribution channel for knowledge about their rights, their ability to organize for freedom, and their hope for a better life.

SCHOOLS CHANGE EVERYTHING

By educating the children, Schools4Freedom become the catalyst bringing entire villages of 100 to 200 people to freedom.

Each school educates at least 40 former slave children.

These students will spend three years getting up to grade level so they can catch up and transfer to Indian Government schools.

School structures are usually a roof

SCHOOLS4FREEDOM PROVIDE:

  • A shelter or roof that protects children from the heat and rain
  • Two local teachers who are culturally aware of the local challenges faced by their students
  • Books and other educational supplies
  • Hot lunches for the students
  • A solar lamp that supplies light for studying at night and helps prevent rape and snakebites
  • Rights and vocational training for the adults in the community so that at the end of three years they are empowered and moving forward to create a life they want to live
  • Community front-line workers to advocate for villagers with the government

EDUCATION IS THE BEST VACCINATION AGAINST SLAVERY

The world is forever changed for the villages touched by SCHOOLS4FREEDOM. They not only learn their rights, but also how to access them and force the government to deliver on promises made to all Indians.

They will never again be duped by moneylenders or fooled by sweet-talking traffickers.

Here’s the best thing:  No more children will be born into slavery in these villages.

Here’s the best, best thing: Villagers are already spreading the lessons learned and helping other villages to freedom.

Students empowered to change their own worlds.
